Please find a further update from West Sussex County Council regarding these important works to deliver improved pedestrian and cycle infrastructure within Burgess Hill town Centre.
Update:
This remains a live project and progress is continuing well both with the town centre works and the improvements taking place at Wivelsfield Station. While we continue to summarise recent progress and look forward to upcoming work areas, there are two key areas to draw readers' attention to:
- Construction of raised table crossing points during the Easter holidays – While the majority of works from the Keymer Road to Old Station Road are nearing completion, the Contract Team will be using the quieter periods during the Easter Holidays to construct raised table crossings at the side roads through the Burgess Hill Station and Western Gateway Scheme. This will involve temporary road closures and minor diversions for short periods with work at the junctions of The Brow and Wolstonbury Way during the 1st week of the Easter Break and work at the junctions of School Close and Queens Crescent during the second week. A letter drop to immediately affected residents and businesses has taken place and advance signing has been put in place.
- Re-profiling of carriageway resurfacing work through Station Road – Carriageway resurfacing through Station Road has been re-programmed to June / July. The Contract Team have been coordinating with the WSCC Carriageway Surfacing team who were due to undertake some surfacing work in Station Road later this year. This coordination of the surfacing work will minimise disruption to the town centre and ensure the County Council and local residents and business benefit from the improved efficiency. The re-profiling of the surfacing work also allow the Contract Team to work with the County Council Drainage team to address pre-existing surface water drainage issues linked to the manhole cover in the vicinity of the new signalised junction.
Recent Week’s Works
- Final surface material has been laid at Burgess Hill station frontage, block paving is being finalised in Church Road and snagging details continue to be addressed.
- All planting areas have been complete and new trees staked in. The landscape contractor will be undertaking monthly maintenance visits to these areas for a minimum of 12 months to ensure all new planting is maintained
- Work continues through Queen Elizabeth Avenue to widen the footway to provide a safe and attractive route through this corridor and pedestrian diversions remain in place as required.
- Work nears completion to the west of the Wivelsfield Station bridge on Leylands Road and construction of improved footways is now taking place to the east of the rail bridge, including the relocation of the temporary signals.
Looking Forward into Next Week
Work is continuing at Wivelsfield Station to deliver pedestrian and public realm improvements between Junction Road and the Station entrance – work is currently taking place to the east of the rail bridge. These works require the use of temporary traffic signals for the safe movement of traffic, pedestrians and site operatives. All traffic management requirements are available on the webpages and the county council streetworks information. As ever, the contract team will continue to engage with the local community to ensure access is maintained at all times.
As noted above, the period over the Easter Holidays will be used to construct the raised table crossings at the side road junctions with Station Road and will require temporary traffic management and minor diversions.
Work will continue at Queen Elizabeth Avenue to widen the northern footway and the contract team will continue to review snagging items and programme these in with the wider scheme delivery.
A full list of the impacted areas are detailed on the WSCC web pages, including the required traffic management to ensure safety is maintained for all highway users and site operatives - https://yourvoice.westsussex.gov.uk/bhpcp.
