On the 7th Day of Christmas Mims Davies MP reminds residents to drive responsibly.
1 in 5 night-time fatal crashes last December had a 17-20-year-old at the wheel, we must remind our younger generations, and all generations, to drive safe during this festive period.
Overall, drunk drivers are involved in nearly a fifth (18%) of all fatalities on our roads. This equates to an estimated 280 fatal drink-drive collisions in 2022, the highest level since 2009. Impairment by drugs is listed in 6.2% of fatal collisions.
Mims would like to remind residents to be safe during this Christmas period.
Drink driving conviction can result in up to 14 years imprisonment, an unlimited fine and disqualification from driving for two years. Drivers who are caught tailgating or hogging the middle lane can be issued with a fixed penalty notice.
Mims Davies MP said:
I hope everyone is having an enjoyable end to 2024.
Whilst we may be enjoying seeing our loved ones and celebrating Christmas and NYE, we must remember to stay safe.
Drink-driving ruins lives, even just one or two drinks can cause loss of concentration and reaction times and ruin lives – as well as resulting in prison times or losing your license.
The temptation for drivers, of any age, to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, or being impaired by drugs, can be greater in December as we get carried away with the festivities as many head out in the evening to pubs, bars and restaurants for Christmas socialising and New Years Eve in particular.
So, please remember to have a great time, but stay safe.
