Following Mims Davies MP’s recent appointment as Shadow Minister for Women & Equalities, Mims met with Katie from the Terrence Higgins Trust in Westminster to discuss sexual health and ending HIV cases by 2030.
As a constituency MP for East Grinstead, Uckfield and the Villages getting these messages out across all parts of our country is vital to make this change in every community.
Anyone can get HIV but people from certain groups or parts of the world are more likely to be affected. In particular, men who have sex with men, the Black African community, and those who inject drugs are disproportionately affected and have an increased risk of HIV transmission.
Mims heard how there is the opportunity for the UK to become the first country in the world to end new HIV Cases. The Conservative Government committed to the goal of ending new HIV cases in England by 2030 and published the HIV Action Plan for England. There has been real progress made and there has been a welcome decline in new transmissions of HIV in gay and Bisexual men.
But there is still more to do, and Mims discussed how we can make sure we can still reach the 2030 target.
Steps from quick and easy HIV testing so everyone knows their status and the pill PrEP which prevents new HIV transmission.
Mims Davies MP said:
“I was very pleased to join Katie from the Terrance Higgins Trust to discuss this important topic.
Both the Conservative and Labour manifestos committed to ending HIV cases by 2030. It was good to hear the progress that has been made and the practical steps that we can take now from PrEP and STI postal testing as well as a sexual health strategy.
There is one parliament left to make sure we reach the important goal.
I will work constructively with and hold the Labour Government to account on this important pledge to ensure we make it a reality.”
