Mims Davies MP Champions the Value of Beauty in the UK
Mims met with the British Beauty Council this month to discuss the £27.2bn British beauty industry and its contribution to both people as individuals, but also to the high streets of towns and cities like ours in East Grinstead, Uckfield and the villages.
As well as supporting wellbeing, igniting creativity and offering unique careers to more than 600,000 people, it also champions science and STEM, from product formulation and ingredients to AI technology and automation.
Hair and beauty salons are also intrinsic to EGU high streets, opening more new businesses across our towns and cities than cafés, restaurants, pubs, betting shops or stores.
Mims had the pleasure of meeting with founder and stylists from the salon, Josh Wood Atelier, to find out more about the contribution salons make to local communities as well as the opportunities they give young people wanting to come into the industry through apprenticeships.
Mims also learnt about the work the beauty industry is doing when it comes to sustainable innovation and operating planet-conscious businesses, meeting with UK brand, Elemis who are leading the way in this space and helping to bring industry together to collaborate for the green transition.
Mims Davies MP said:
I was pleased to join the British Beauty Council and speak with them regarding the £27.2 billion British beauty industry and its contribution to all our communities.
So, it was important to meet and hear from the Council on its work to spotlight the many different careers available in the beauty industry via the ‘Future Talent Programme’ and hear from No7 Beauty Company on the science and innovation that helps to build the products and services they offer.
The film series for the Future Talent Programme is a free resource I hope we can utilise within the schools of East Grinstead, Uckfield and our villages.
The beauty industry truly celebrates the creativity of the UK, with people utilising beauty for self-expression, confidence and to create some of the most iconic ‘looks’ throughout history. Professional make-up artists from MAC offered an insight into the skill and technique that goes into some of the looks that we see on stage, screen and on catwalks, sharing how the sector gives them unmatched career opportunities.
Through all of this, I learnt about the many opportunities open to people with any level of education or experience that can change lives. Not only are 81% of the workforce female, but 86% are business owners, demonstrating how women can break the glass ceiling.
It was a delight to learn more about the power of the sector and I have my eye on the beauty as an industry that will propel growth and success here in the UK for years to come.
