Thank you to those constituents who have contacted me about Jagtar Singh Johal. I share your concern and appreciate you want to see Mr Johal’s case resolved as soon as possible.
The UK has raised Mr Johal’s case with the Government of India on over 100 occasions. Under the last UK Government, ministers raised allegations of torture and mistreatment, and Mr Johal's right to a fair trial. It may reassure you to know that consular staff visit Mr Johal regularly to check on his welfare.
Prior to the General Election 2024, I understand former Foreign Secretary, Lord Cameron, was reviewing the UK’s approach to Mr Johal’s case. I am pleased that the new Foreign Secretary has chosen to pursue a similar approach, having asked for progress on this matter.
I do, however, note with disappointment that the new Foreign Secretary recently refused to confirm whether he thought Mr Johal was being arbitrarily detained; a statement he made fairly often and freely when in Opposition.
Having adopted the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee's recommendation that the UK establish a special envoy for Britain's wrongly detained abroad, I hope the new Foreign Secretary will set out a clear timeline for when he plans to appoint someone to this position.
Please be assured, I will continue to follow developments on this issue closely.
