I firmly believe that the Government should make sure that support allocated by the Department for Work and Pensions goes to those most in need. However, it is clear that the sickness and disability benefits system isn’t working in the way it was intended and it needs reform to make support sustainable for the future. The UK’s health landscape has changed considerably so exploring such reforms can help us design a welfare system that is fit for the future whilst being fair to the taxpayers who fund it.
I understand the current Government has published its ‘Get Britain Working’ White Paper, however, we are yet to see detailed proposals outlining how they will tackle the issues facing our welfare system whilst also protecting vulnerable benefit recipients. It is projected that the cost of the current sickness and disability benefit system is to grow by an unsustainable £30 billion over the next five years. Any proposals by the Government must grapple with the fundamental problems within our welfare system, put under increased strain since the pandemic, and need to be clear on actions rather than leaning heavily on tough rhetoric.
Whilst the Government are yet to announce their reforms, I shall always endeavour to hold their feet to the fire and ensure that vulnerable residents within our constituency get the support they need. I have already challenged the Government on their approach to the Winter Fuel Allowance which removed a much-needed benefit from 10 million pensioners with negligible improvement to the Department's budgetary position.
I hope the Government announce their reforms soon to prevent built up anxiety amongst those concerned about the future of their current support.
