I have taken some time to respond to those constituents who have written to me about the heinous attack on innocent children which took place in Southport and the subsequent disorder and terrible riots that broke out following this attack, in the town and further afield.
I too was deeply shocked and saddened, and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the attack, their family and friends, and the people of Southport at this very difficult time. That three little girls were so cruelly taken by a barbaric attack at their summer dance school can still be scarcely believed. Those families involved in that day will never forget the terror their youngsters encountered and we all salute the bravery of those who ran into harm to save and protect lives. It is vital that the right steps are taken to ensure that no child, no family, and no community has to face the distress that the people of Southport are feeling.
I am, like many, incredibly concerned about the growing impact of misinformation and disinformation online on our society making daily lives a misery for many in an enlarging way. Too many rush to comment and pass judgement online; the spreading of dangerous gossip and speculation on the internet clearly amplifies division, distress, grief and anger. Sadly, we have seen this from all sides of the political spectrum, with even, I believe, the Chief Executive of Hope not Hate having to apologise for posting unverified claims.
With that being said, the disorder and riots that followed the Southport attack were deeply concerning and have no place in our society. It is saddening to think of the impact the additional violence must be having on the families and community already grieving the most horrific tragedy.
I strongly condemn the acts of violence towards police officers and the criminal damage caused. Such acts must be condemned by everyone, and all individuals who take part should expect to be met with the full weight of the law. I joined various media discussions on this to reiterate that the safety on our streets was paramount and I thank the local police, Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne OBE and all for their actions in making sure, along with our local councils, we were able to maintain order by keeping our community calm and supported through a very difficult time.
Like you, I firmly believe in the importance of building stronger, more integrated communities. Community is what brings people together and strengthens the values that make our country successful. You can be certain I will be closely monitoring this new Labour Government’s work in this area.
Locally, I have been assured by Sussex police they were engaging with our communities on a daily basis, particularly faith-based communities, to provide reassurance and an opportunity to raise any concerns directly. Enhanced police patrols were deployed, with particular focus on areas where concerns were raised, in the week following and I am truly grateful for their dedication and bravery in both meeting these specific challenges and continuing to police Sussex safely.
