Local MP, Mims Davies, visited Haywards Heath College on Friday to talk to students about her roles as the Member of Parliament for Mid Sussex and the Minister for Social Mobility, Youth and Progression.
Over 30 enthusiastic students came to hear Mims talk about her job as an MP and what had inspired her to become one. She then opened the floor to questions which were wide ranging, thoughtful, interesting and, at times, quite demanding.
The group of bright and talented sixth form students certainly didn’t shy away from posing a challenging array of questions to Mims, covering the economic situation, immigration, the coronation, the environment, and her thoughts on Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss. As such, she was extremely impressed by their level of political engagement and interest and answered their questions openly and honestly.
Overall, it was an intellectually stimulating afternoon where the pupils impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm, and where she indeed impressed them with her passion and commitment to a job that she said is the most rewarding thing she had done in her life so far.
Commenting on the visit, Mims said:
“I would like to thank Ben Frier and Charlie Richardson for making this visit possible. Getting our young people interested in the workings of our democracy is a vital part of my work as an MP and it was a pleasure to return to Haywards Heath College and take questions from the floor on my national campaigns as well as the work I do in Mid Sussex. As expected, the thoughtful and wide ranging questions from students dispelled any myths about political apathy among the young.”
