Mims Davies MP was thrilled to be live on BBC Radio 5 yesterday morning with Chris Warburton and guests taking questions from members of the public on a number of topics including:
Equestrian Sport - as the former Sports Minister - trust, love and care between the animal and the competitor is at the heart of this. Taking responsibility is extremely important and everyone who works with animals must remember this.
2 Child Benefit Cap - listeners have said they're not wanting their taxes going on other people's children. We don't want any children living in poverty and we need longer term change. I spent 5 years as a Minister in DWP, which is a wonderful department with a dedicated team which is truly dug into every community and determined to help people no matter their circumstances. There has to be a balance between fairness for tax payers and helping people get the flying start and as a Government the Conservatives changed the Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rules to help people be £200 better off, we had the cost of living payments and so much more. A progression agenda is what is really needed to help.
Just Stop Oil Protestors Jailed - I used to work in road safety monitoring the M25 and worked as a BBC travel reporter. What happened was extremely dangerous and most people understand why the just stop oil protestors are doing what they do, it's just how they're going about it that is not okay. If you're putting other people's safety at risk, there are consequences. You can protest peacefully without all of this - just take outside Parliament as an example where there are peaceful protests everyday and they get their point across.
Leadership Campaign - I think we're learning in Government that Labour needs to understand how you manage a broad church as much as we do in opposition. Our party is focussed on aspiration, opportunity, pragmatism. I don't want blue on blue fighting, we need ideas and someone who will cut through and someone who understands Conservative values and what we stand for. A positive engagement with our members, but also making sure we are reaching beyond that membership.
